  • B is for Buoyancy.
  • C is for Control.
  • D is for Device.

Other names fora BCD or Buoyancy Control Device include BC, stab jacket, buoyancy wing or ABLJ. Although I don’t think you can get an ABLJ any more as this is an old style buoyancy device.

The reason for needing a BCD is because of the density of water, which gets greater the deeper you dive.

A buoyancy Control Device has an inflatable bladder inside that is filled with air. As you descend on a dive you add more air to this air-bladder. This extra air compensates for the fact that you become less buoyancy the deeper you go. The reduced buoyancy in due to the water pressure around you.

What Does BCD Stand For In Diving?
