If you are reading this article about technical diving liveaboard Red Sea, then you probably already know what technical diving is all about.

Having said that, let me run through what I think makes a good technical diving liveaboard.

  • Sidemount divingSidemount diving is when your scuba diving air tanks are mounted alongside the diver. They are usually below the shoulders and along the hips, instead of on your back. This configuration is better for diving in confined spaces like technical wreck diving penetrations.
  • Rebreather support – Many technical scuba divers use rebreathers (also known as closed circuit scuba equipment)to dive, as compared to using conventional scuba apparatus or open circuit scuba equipment.

Not all the Red Sea liveaboards listed in the table below have sidemount diving and not all support rebreathers. However, I’ve included the ones that don’t offer this support in the list as they do support technical divers in general.

Other aspects to consider when choosing your Red Sea technical diving liveaboard

In addition to having the above two important support features, the liveaboard should be highly rated (the liveaboards below are rated by customers out of 10).

You may also choose a liveaboard based on the number of divers it takes. The less divers, the more intimate the diving and therefore the less-crowded the dive sites are.

Obviously, another important choice consideration is the cost of the liveaboard. Depending on whether you’re on a budget or if you want to splash the cash.

Article by Russell Bowyer

Article written by Russell Bowyer who has been a scuba diver since diving on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia in 1989. After his first dive he trained as a BSAC diver in the UK. He attained his Diver Leader certification with BSAC.

He then went on to become a scuba diving instructor, teaching others how to dive and was voted as Diving Officer and Treasurer for the Saffron Walden BSAC Dive Club too. His favourite part to diver training was when he helped newbies overcome their fear of mask clearing.

Russell has dived all over the world, including the UK such as Cornwall, Littlehampton, Dartmouth and the Farne Islands (see image to the left), on liveaboards in the Red Sea, the Caribbean (Barbados, Antigua and Bonaire are favourites to name a few), South Africa and the USA.

Russell is experienced in all dive types, including drift diving, deep dives that involved decompression stops and recreational dives too. His absolute favourite type of diving is scuba diving with sharks.
