Where is Komodo National Park?
Komodo National Park is a national park in the south east of Indonesia. Komodo, which is known for the Komodo Dragons, is located within the Lesser Sunda Islands.
The national park includes the three larger islands and 26 smaller ones. The largest islands include Komodo, Padar and Rinca, which are all volcanic islands.
The underwater world of Komodo is a diver’s delight. With visibility of up to 30 meters (98 feet) and with spectacular marine life that comes in all shapes and sizes.
There are some serious currents that run throughout the Indonesian waters, and Komodo is no exception.
It is these strong currents that make the waters rich in plankton. It is this plankton that then attracts other marine life which feeds on the abundance of food.
You’ll find large shoals of fish and pelagics to see on top of the benefits a National Park provides to the region, making the waters and reefs extremely healthy.
Due to the topography of Komodo and the shallow waters found between the Lesser Sunda Islands, this means there are some serious underwater current.
You can even experience up to 8 knots while diving! You therefore recommended to have drift diving experience before you go.
Komodo is known for manta rays, hammerheads, dolphins, mola mola or sunfish. But you may also be lucky to find pygmy seahorses with their tails wrapped around bright coloured gorgonian fans.
Be mindful to take a camera or Gopro on your dive trip to Komodo, as you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use it.
