Ikan Biru Liveaboard Review - Expert Guide to Choosing Your Liveaboard

Russell Bowyer here. I've written this Ikan Biru Liveaboard review to help you confidently choose and book the right liveaboard. As a qualified diving instructor and Advanced BSAC Diver with 500+ dives worldwide, I've helped countless divers pick their perfect liveaboard - whether it's your first time liveaboard or you're an experienced diver seeking your next adventure.

Read more about Russell's diving experience

My diving experience spans cold-water UK drysuit dives, warm coral reefs in the Caribbean, the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, and South Africa. As a former BSAC Diving Officer and diving instructor, I've taught many people to dive and taken a lot of the divers I taught on their first dive. I also used to organise and run dive trips in the UK, with one of my favourites being expeditions to the Farne Islands to dive with the seals. I've logged every type of dive: decompression stop deep dives, wreck dives, shark dives, night dives, drift dives, and everything in between. This hands-on experience means I know exactly what makes a great liveaboard experience, having dived from liveaboards myself and loved it. This is why I came up with the SDE Liveaboard Rating* to help you choose the best liveaboard for you.

Customer review from Liveaboard.com

Expect to have the time of your life on this liveaboard. An unforgettable experience which I would do again in a heartbeat. Don't be put off by the common sleeping quarters. The upper deck has more than ample space for the number of guests onboard. When they set up the mattresses and bedding at night, I guarantee that you will have as good a quality of sleep, if not better, than if you were sleeping inside a cabin. You will be well fed (if not overfed). The ship crew, consisting of a cook, his assistant, a boat engineer/carpenter, a master of navigation, a tender boat operator and a bosun, are all cool people and do their utmost to give you the best experience possible. As for the main reason for going on a liveaboard, the diving is some of the most spectacular you will ever do. Ikan Biru will cover all of the top dive sites in the national park's north and central regions over the 4 days. The dive guides are open to specific requests if within their means...while it wasn't on the original trip plan, I made the request at the beginning of the tour to dive at Tatawa Kecil and the request was granted the following day. An entertaining dynamic between the duo of French and British dive guides, but clearly a good working partnership between two people who take their jobs seriously. Their in-depth knowledge of the local tidal conditions means you will reach dive sites at the best times and when sea conditions are most favourable, and in most cases when nobody else is there! One of the trip's memorable moments came while filling in my logbook in the kitchen quarters at night, listening to the two guides seated next to me planning the itinerary for the following day, and hearing them discuss tides and currents as if it were science.”

Recommended for: The selection of dive sites and good planning that went into timing each dive. Excellent knowledge of local tidal conditions. Staff were all cool people.
