Southwest Caye Wall Liveaboard Dive Site

Southwest Caye Wall gives divers a clear view of Glover’s Reef dropping into deep Caribbean water. The upper reef begins at a moderate depth before coral-covered ledges, sea fans and sponges continue down the wall, producing the feeling of flying above open blue water.

Parrotfish, angelfish, snappers and jacks use the reef top, while grouper, moray eels, lobsters, crabs and nudibranchs reward closer inspection of the ledges. Spotted eagle rays, manta rays, reef sharks and hammerheads are possible in open water, but they are never guaranteed. Garden eels may be found in sandy areas away from the wall.

This is an intermediate dive because the wall can encourage a deeper profile and exposed sections may carry current. Good buoyancy, regular computer checks and conservative gas management matter. Carry a surface marker buoy and be prepared for a drifting ascent if the guide cannot return to the mooring. An established Glover’s Reef dive-site guide describes Southwest Caye Wall as a deep wall with generally limited current and strong visibility, while conditions still vary by day.

Reaching Glover’s Reef from mainland Belize takes time, which makes the liveaboard format particularly valuable. You wake close to the site, can dive before visiting boats arrive and retain the flexibility to move if wind or current makes the southwest wall unsuitable. The itinerary can pair it with Long Caye Wall and the shallower coral garden at Emerald Forest Reef.

A sheltered nearby site may be chosen for the evening night dive, when octopus, squid, lobsters and crabs become more active. The captain and dive team will decide according to the mooring and weather rather than promising a night dive at this wall. Compare Belize diving liveaboards and confirm Glover’s Reef is listed on the exact departure, because not every Belize itinerary travels this far south.
