Emerald Forest Reef earns its name from the dense stands of elkhorn coral covering the shallow reef crest. In clear water, the branching coral creates the impression of an underwater forest, with sandy grooves and deeper channels providing space to explore without losing sight of the reef.

The shallowest coral begins at about five metres, while the terrain descends through spur-and-groove formations towards deeper sand and the outer reef. Blue tangs, parrotfish, butterflyfish and angelfish move above the coral, and creole fish may gather in larger groups. Slower observation reveals arrow crabs, brittle stars, sea cucumbers and tunicates, while nurse sharks, reef sharks and spotted eagle rays may occasionally pass the reef edge.

Mild current and a controllable depth range can make Emerald Forest suitable for beginners accompanied by a guide. The priority is careful buoyancy: elkhorn coral is fragile, so fins, gauges and dangling equipment must stay well clear. The atoll’s distance from mainland Belize makes liveaboard diving particularly worthwhile. You wake near the reef, avoid a long daily crossing and can enter the water before any visiting boats arrive. Most liveaboard itineraries provide several dives a day and may include a night dive on a suitable nearby reef. Emerald Forest is especially rewarding in daylight, when sunlight shows the shape and colour of the coral, but remaining within Glover’s Reef after sunset broadens the week beyond a single type of dive.
