Baking Swash Reef sits on the western side of Glover’s Reef Atoll, where a narrow cut passes through shallow coral before the reef opens onto sand and deeper coral formations. It is often used as an introductory or check dive, but there is enough variety here to make it more than somewhere to adjust your weighting.

The shallow reef is the main attraction. Coral heads rise close to the surface, with parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and creole fish moving between the hard and soft corals. Look beneath ledges for moray eels, lobsters and banded coral shrimp, while turtles, stingrays and nurse sharks may pass across the sand. The deeper section offers larger coral mounds and a different view of the atoll’s structure.

Although the usual conditions can be gentle, this is still a boat-access site and the cut may be used by small vessels. Stay close to the guide, use a surface marker buoy when instructed and never surface unexpectedly in the channel. Glover’s Reef lies well offshore, which is where a liveaboard earns its place. Instead of losing hours travelling from the mainland, you wake within the atoll and can dive while the reef is quiet. It also becomes easy to combine Baking Swash with Emerald Forest Reef, Split Reefs and deeper sites elsewhere around Glover’s Reef.

Liveaboard schedules commonly include several dives each day and night diving when conditions and the itinerary permit. Baking Swash itself is best appreciated in daylight, but staying offshore gives you the option to see nearby reefs after dark, when lobsters, crabs and hunting reef fish become more active.
