Old Bank is a remote coral bank and wall on Utila’s less frequently visited north side. Divers can remain over the shallower bank or follow the wall at intermediate depth. Open-water exposure means current and surface conditions deserve more attention than the reef profile alone suggests.

The Bay Islands are known for warm Caribbean water, coral walls and abundant reef life, but each site has its own reason to be included. At Old Bank, divers should slow down enough to notice the reef as well as looking into open water. Turtles, rays, groupers, jacks and barracuda are all possible, while sponges, sea fans, moray eels and smaller reef fish reward a closer look.

The long day-boat journey and exposed coast make Old Bank particularly suitable for liveaboard diving. Staying nearby allows an early entry and avoids repeating the crossing from Utila Town. Night diving may be possible on the wider itinerary, but the crew selects a sheltered site according to conditions; Old Bank should only be treated as the night-dive location when the operator confirms it.

The site combines well with Duppy Waters and CJ’s Drop-off, giving the itinerary a useful change of depth, terrain or diving style. A dive computer and surface marker buoy are sensible throughout the Bay Islands. Nitrox is useful for repetitive diving when the diver is qualified and the operator provides it.
