CJ’s Drop-off is a steep reef edge where the shallow coral shelf gives way to Utila’s deeper north-side water. Good buoyancy and depth awareness are important because the wall continues well beyond recreational limits. The guide will choose the starting depth and direction around current.

The Bay Islands are known for warm Caribbean water, coral walls and abundant reef life, but each site has its own reason to be included. At CJ’s Drop-off, divers should slow down enough to notice the reef as well as looking into open water. Turtles, rays, groupers, jacks and barracuda are all possible, while sponges, sea fans, moray eels and smaller reef fish reward a closer look.

The exposed north side is weather-dependent. A liveaboard gives the crew more freedom to visit when the sea is settled and move elsewhere when the drop-off is unsuitable. Night diving may be possible on the wider itinerary, but the crew selects a sheltered site according to conditions; CJ’s Drop-off should only be treated as the night-dive location when the operator confirms it.

The site combines well with Duppy Waters and Old Bank, giving the itinerary a useful change of depth, terrain or diving style. A dive computer and surface marker buoy are sensible throughout the Bay Islands. Nitrox is useful for repetitive diving when the diver is qualified and the operator provides it.
