Hawksbill Bank is a coral bank broken by ridges, sponge-covered outcrops and sandy channels. The top of the bank allows a comfortable start before the route follows deeper coral along the edge. It suits intermediate divers, with the final depth adjusted to conditions and experience.

The Bay Islands are known for warm Caribbean water, coral walls and abundant reef life, but each site has its own reason to be included. At Hawksbill Bank, divers should slow down enough to notice the reef as well as looking into open water. Turtles, rays, groupers, jacks and barracuda are all possible, while sponges, sea fans, moray eels and smaller reef fish reward a closer look.

Although local boats can visit, a liveaboard can arrive before the busiest part of the morning and combine Hawksbill Bank with Utila’s more distant walls or seamounts. Night diving may be possible on the wider itinerary, but the crew selects a sheltered site according to conditions; Hawksbill Bank should only be treated as the night-dive location when the operator confirms it.

The site combines well with Cannery Bank and Raggedy Cay, giving the itinerary a useful change of depth, terrain or diving style. A dive computer and surface marker buoy are sensible throughout the Bay Islands. Nitrox is useful for repetitive diving when the diver is qualified and the operator provides it.
