Grouper Flats lies on the outer reef at Glover’s Reef Atoll and is valued for the chance to observe several grouper species within one dive. Nassau and black grouper may rest beneath coral ledges or hover close to sea whips and gorgonians, while smaller reef fish fill the coral around them.

The site is not only about grouper. Snappers, blue tangs, creole fish and barracuda move across the reef, garden eels rise from sandy patches and moray eels hide within cracks. Nurse sharks and Caribbean reef sharks may cruise past, while southern stingrays and spotted eagle rays are possible over the open sand and reef edge.

Profiles can extend from the reef top towards deeper outer sections, and current may be more noticeable than at sheltered sites. Intermediate experience is therefore a sensible minimum. Maintain depth awareness, keep a surface marker buoy available and avoid approaching or surrounding resting grouper. Glover’s Reef is around 43 kilometres from the mainland, so a liveaboard changes the practical experience. Instead of using much of the day for the crossing, you stay within the atoll, dive early and can return to the water several times. Grouper Flats can be combined with the shark-focused outer-reef terrain at Shark Point and the coral formations at Emerald Forest Reef.

Night dives may be offered on suitable nearby reefs, although the operator will decide the location according to mooring, current and weather. That flexibility is another liveaboard benefit: the crew can choose the safest and most rewarding site rather than forcing a fixed plan.
