Coco’s Sea Mount is an exposed offshore seamount surrounded by deep Caribbean water. Divers normally descend onto the summit, work around the current-facing side and finish with a blue-water ascent. A delayed surface marker buoy and close attention to the guide are essential.

The Bay Islands are known for warm Caribbean water, coral walls and abundant reef life, but each site has its own reason to be included. At Coco’s Sea Mount, divers should slow down enough to notice the reef as well as looking into open water. Turtles, rays, groupers, jacks and barracuda are all possible, while sponges, sea fans, moray eels and smaller reef fish reward a closer look.

This is the type of site where a liveaboard earns its place. The crew can reach the seamount without a long return to shore and can change the timing if current or surface conditions are wrong. Night diving may be possible on the wider itinerary, but the crew selects a sheltered site according to conditions; Coco’s Sea Mount should only be treated as the night-dive location when the operator confirms it.

The site combines well with Black Hills and Mary’s Place, giving the itinerary a useful change of depth, terrain or diving style. A dive computer and surface marker buoy are sensible throughout the Bay Islands. Nitrox is useful for repetitive diving when the diver is qualified and the operator provides it.
