Black Hills is a current-swept offshore seamount whose coral summit rises to around 11 metres. The usual route circles the summit and works progressively deeper along its sides. Current can change quickly because the bank is exposed, so the guide may use a negative entry and finish the dive in open water.

The Bay Islands are known for warm Caribbean water, coral walls and abundant reef life, but each site has its own reason to be included. At Black Hills, divers should slow down enough to notice the reef as well as looking into open water. Turtles, rays, groupers, jacks and barracuda are all possible, while sponges, sea fans, moray eels and smaller reef fish reward a closer look.

A liveaboard can reach Black Hills early, before day boats arrive from Utila Town, and can return when current and visibility are favourable. That flexibility matters more here than simply following a fixed daily timetable. Night diving may be possible on the wider itinerary, but the crew selects a sheltered site according to conditions; Black Hills should only be treated as the night-dive location when the operator confirms it.

The site combines well with Cannery Bank and Coco’s Sea Mount, giving the itinerary a useful change of depth, terrain or diving style. A dive computer and surface marker buoy are sensible throughout the Bay Islands. Nitrox is useful for repetitive diving when the diver is qualified and the operator provides it.
