If you are worried about swimming in the sea where great white sharks are known to live, you may be wondering or worried about how close to shore can a great white come.

Great white sharks sometimes get within a few metres from the shore and have been spotted close-in at Cape Cod, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Clement, Mexico and Australia. How close these sharks get depends on the size of the great white shark and how deep the water is a few metres from the shore.

If you would love to dive with great white sharks, one of the best ways to do this is to book yourself on a scuba diving liveaboard that visits Guadalupe Island in Mexico. You can check the latest and best deals on liveaboards using the following window:

The following great white shark in Cape Cod, Massachusetts came within 25 yards (22.86 metres) from the shore in search of Gray Seals.

Large Great White Sharks Near Shore in Cape Cod
231,668 views Premiered Sep 8, 2022 In August, I was able to spend a week in Cape Cod with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy observing and learning about the local white shark populations. The first thing I noticed is that white sharks on the coast here tend to be a bit larger than the juvenile sharks I observe in Southern California. At one point, I filmed a shark approximately 12-14 feet long just 25 yards from shore. This video is part one of a series I’m releasing about sharks in and around Cape Cod.

Great white shark within metres from Race Point Beach, Cape Cod MA

In the following video this large great white shark is probably less than 10 metres (11 yards) from the shore. In this case the predatory white shark had chased a seal into the shallows, which is a common refuge for seals to hide in shallower waters.

Unfortunately for the seal it didn’t realise the white shark was still nearby when it ventured back into the sea. You see the shark attacked the seal only feet from the shore and succumbed to its attack.

Another great white shark hunting Grey Seals close to the shoreline of a Cape Cod beach Massachusetts. The attack by this large great white shark was witnessed by a family of beachgoers. The seal initially escaped by hauling itself out onto the beach, but as you will see from the blood pouring into the sea, it didn’t stand much chance of surviving and later died of its wounds.

In the above image captured from this video, courtesy of ABC World News, this great white shark was at times about 3-4 yards (2.74-3.66 metres) from the shoreline on this Cape Cod beach, Massachusetts.

Great white shark within metres from Southern Californian beach

This great white shark was only yards from this southern Californian beach near surfers, but it wasn’t hunting humans. This great white shark was hunting sting rays found along this coast line close to the shore where the stingrays are hunting for prey themselves.

Great White Shark’s Close Encounter with a Surfer: A Shark Hunts for Sting Rays
I observe a handful of human & great white shark encounters in Southern California. Why are there so many white sharks in shallow waters? We take a look at some factors regarding that question.

Great white sharks are masters of waves close to shore

Also in the above video there are a few close encounters between humans on surfboards and great white sharks in Southern California. The reason why these great white sharks are in the shallows to begin with is they are hunting sting rays and not humans.

Great white shark in the surf-zone close to shore in Australia. The thumbnail saying that the great white is stalking surfers is stretching the truth, as this great white shark is probably looking for sting rays in the shallows. You’ll see the white shark gets close to the surfers, but shows little interest in them despite how close it gets.

Great white shark stranded in shallow water close to shore

This great white shark is about 14 feet (4.26 metres) long and was filmed in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. You’ll see it has been injured just behind its dorsal fin probably by a propeller. The shark is only a short distance from the shore in only a few feet of water, despite its huge size.

The above image was screen short at the beginning of the video where you can see how close to shore this white shark actually is. The reason why this white shark was so close is because it was recovering from an injury you can see from the video. It is thought that the shark was feeding on sting rays whilst recovering from its injury.
