The Lost Blue Hole – A Hidden Gem off Nassau
Just 16 kilometres east of Nassau lies one of the Bahamas’ most unique underwater wonders, the Lost Blue Hole, also known as Dean Blue Hole Long Island Bahamas.
This natural marine sinkhole is around 90 metres deep and 25 metres across, forming a perfect circle that glows a dark sapphire blue against the surrounding turquoise sea. Because it sits offshore, it’s a favourite stop on Bahamas liveaboard itineraries, giving divers the chance to explore it in calm, uncrowded conditions.
Unlike deep blue holes such as Belize’s Great Blue Hole, the Lost Blue Hole begins at a depth of only 14 metres, making it easily accessible for most divers.
Its bell-shaped structure shelters marine life from strong currents, creating a calm environment with exceptional visibility and easy diving conditions.
Why Dive the Lost Blue Hole by Liveaboard
A liveaboard trip lets you reach the Lost Blue Hole effortlessly and spend time exploring at the best times of day, without rushing back to Nassau. You’ll enjoy multiple dives, expert guides, and comfortable accommodation, the perfect mix for divers wanting a relaxed but thrilling adventure.
The site’s rim is covered with healthy coral gardens, sea fans, and sponges that attract a colourful range of reef fish such as snappers, groupers, and angelfish.
You may spot turtles gliding gracefully through the blue, stingrays resting in the sand, and even schools of jacks swirling above the entrance to the hole.
But what really excites divers here are the shark encounters. Nurse sharks and Caribbean reef sharks are often seen circling near the bottom, sometimes shooting up past divers as they enter or exit the hole. These sharks are calm, curious, and a highlight of any Bahamas liveaboard itinerary.
Because conditions inside the blue hole are generally calm, it’s suitable for divers with Open Water certification or above, making it one of the few blue holes in the world that’s accessible to a wide range of skill levels.
A Peaceful and Unforgettable Dive Experience
Between dives, you’ll relax onboard your liveaboard, enjoying sunshine, clear water, and the friendly atmosphere that makes Bahamas diving so special.
With warm seas year-round and short travel distances between sites, it’s an easy, rewarding destination that offers a taste of adventure without the long crossings required elsewhere.
The Lost Blue Hole combines natural beauty, gentle conditions, and thrilling marine life, all within easy reach of Nassau.
Whether you’re a new diver looking to experience a blue hole for the first time, or a seasoned traveller chasing something extraordinary, this liveaboard experience will leave you with memories, and photos you’ll treasure forever.
