Fotteyo Kandu Liveaboard Dive Site

Fotteyo Kandu cuts through the eastern edge of Vaavu Atoll and combines the excitement of a current-fed channel with caves, overhangs and coral-covered reef walls. Incoming water can bring excellent visibility and concentrates marine life around the channel entrance, where grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays, tuna, trevally and barracuda may patrol.

The reef structure is a major part of the attraction. Soft corals brighten the overhangs and recessed sections, while schools of snapper and sweetlips gather closer to the reef. A torch is useful for seeing the colour beneath the ledges, but entering enclosed overhead environments should only be considered by divers with appropriate training and under the direction of the guide.

Current strength and the route chosen can change considerably with the tide. This is best treated as an advanced dive requiring good buoyancy, confident equalisation and the ability to make a controlled negative entry when instructed. Stay close to the guide, monitor depth and gas carefully and carry a surface marker buoy for the open-water ascent and boat pickup.

Fotteyo lies far from Malé and is particularly well suited to liveaboard diving. Staying within the atoll lets the crew plan the dive around the most favourable tidal window instead of working around a long day-boat journey. It may also be combined with the famous Alimatha House Reef night dive, giving divers two very different Vaavu experiences on the same itinerary.
