Stingray City is defined by an exceptionally shallow sandy-bottom site inside the North Sound barrier reef, distinct from Stingray City Sandbar. The original Stingray City scuba site lies inside Grand Cayman’s North Sound at roughly 4 metres, separate from the shallower sandbar visited by most snorkelling tours. Southern stingrays traditionally gathered over the sandy bottom, creating an unusually close encounter, although recent operators report that sightings at the dive site can vary.

Underwater, look for southern stingrays, jacks, snapper, sergeant majors and other North Sound reef fish. These are likely or possible encounters rather than promises. Season, weather, recent animal movement and the precise mooring all affect what appears on an individual dive, so the reef structure and diving conditions should be the main reason for choosing the site.

The depth is beginner-friendly, but buoyancy can be awkward in very shallow water and boat traffic requires close attention. Stingray City is boat-accessed and numerous local excursions operate in North Sound. A liveaboard is not required, but an early visit may avoid some day-tour traffic. Confirm that the itinerary means the original scuba site rather than the shallow sandbar. That distinction matters in the Cayman Islands, where shore diving and local day boats are already very good. A liveaboard should earn its place by reducing transfers, reaching a site early, supporting several dives in a day or linking Grand Cayman with Little Cayman and Cayman Brac—not by pretending that every Cayman site is otherwise inaccessible.
