Cayo Largo is a diving destination rather than one fixed mooring. The small island sits in the Canarreos Archipelago off Cuba’s southern coast, with numerous reef sites reached by local dive boat. Conditions are often calm and visibility can be excellent, making the area appealing to newer divers as well as experienced divers looking for walls and deeper coral formations.

The underwater landscape ranges from shallow coral gardens to walls that continue beyond normal recreational limits. Turtles, rays, barracuda, tarpon, groupers and moray eels may be seen around the reefs, along with spiny lobsters and schools of Caribbean reef fish. The depth entered on this page represents the normal recreational range across the area, not the full depth of every wall.

Cayo Largo does not require a liveaboard in the same way as Jardines de la Reina. Divers can stay on the island and use local day boats. A liveaboard itinerary can still be useful when it combines Cayo Largo with other parts of the Canarreos Archipelago, reducing transfers and allowing several different areas to be included in one trip. Early departures may also reach popular reefs before other boats, although the actual schedule remains with the operator.

The destination combines naturally with Isla de la Juventud, the largest island in the Canarreos Archipelago. Divers considering a more remote shark-focused trip can also compare it with Jardines de la Reina, but these are separate Cuban diving areas and should not be grouped under the same region.

Night diving may be available through some operators, but it should be confirmed for the chosen itinerary rather than assumed. A 3mm wetsuit is suitable for many divers in the warmer months, while those who feel the cold may prefer a 5mm suit when water temperatures fall. A torch, dive computer and surface marker buoy are useful additions for boat diving and wall profiles.
