How to return a found Gopro: How you return a found Gopro is either through “The lost and found GoPro” on their website, or alternatively by finding it yourself. If you’ve lost your GoPro whilst scuba diving you may be lucky and find it. But this depends on where you’re diving and whether it’s got a floating device to bring it to the surface.

On the GoPro website they have a service to help those who’ve lost their GoPro’s. But also, for those who’ve found a GoPro and not sure what to do about it.

Lost and found GoPro – how to find a lost GoPro

The following methods to find your lost GoPro rely on your lost GoPro being on the surface. If you lost it underwater, which is likely if you’re reading this article as a scuba diver, then the following solutions won’t work.

Lost GoPro App on your phone

This does require that you’ve set it up beforehand, i.e. before you lost it!!

Secondly, the GoPro needs to be within Bluetooth range, but also within WIFI range too. Generally speaking Bluetooth has about 30-50 metres (100-160 feet) for Bluetooth, but WIFI perhaps a bit further.

However, to make this happen, you have about 8 hours, as this is how long the Bluetooth stays on for on your GoPro after you’ve lost it.

What happens if you don’t have the app on your phone?

If you don’t have the GoPro app on your phone. Or if you didn’t set it up before you lost it, what are your options?

You can get an app on your phone which is a Bluetooth locator, like LightBlue Explorer. You can use this to locate your GoPro, so long as it’s within Bluetooth distance.

What if your GoPro was lost underwater?

If however you lost your GoPro on a dive, then you should prepare for another dive on the same dive site. This assumes you have the necessary no-stop decompression time to make another dive on the same dive site.

You’ll need to re-trace your steps (or should I say fin-strokes) of where you dived before. However, the problem with losing a GoPro underwater is currents and tides. If you were on a drift dive, your GoPro is likely to have drifted off and the chances of you finding it are pretty remote!

Lost and found GoPro story

However, if you read the story above, you see that lost GoPro’s can be found. Or you may take her from the story published in the Telegraph where a GoPro was discovered a year after being lost at sea in Dorset, England.

In this incredible story the GoPro camera, which sank to the bottom of the sea, kept on recording. It was eventually traced to its owner after a teenage angler caught it almost a year later.

The video of the footage taken on the GoPro after it was lost. What I find particularly amusing is the crab that walks in front of the camera to be filmed!

GoPro lost for 6 years underwater – found and returned

This GoPro had been lost for around 6 years when it was found by YouTube Jake. So you don’t have to watch the whole video (unless you want to), he finds it at around 9 minutes 15-20 seconds into the video.
